First in Russia Academy of Laser Dentistry
A laser dentistry congress was held as part of the Dental Expo exhibition. The congress gathered dentists interested in one of the most advanced and upcoming dentistry trends. The congress was the first event organized by the Academy of Laser Dentistry, which has been recently founded in Russia.
The new institution created at the initiative of UNIDENT is supposed to become the first educational institution in our country, which will join together the most experienced specialists in this field and will provide comprehensive laser system training for Russian dentists.
At the congress during Dental Expo lectures were delivered by Dmitry Butusov (Biolase) and Olga Risovannaya (Kuban State Medical University)
One of the main reasons why laser dentistry in Russia develops very slowly in comparison with other countries is lack of education in this sphere. Today many clinics can afford buying a laser machine but, as we see, it doesn’t happen.
— These technologies are widely used all over the world, but in our country only few dentists use them, says Professor and Doctor of Medicine Olga Risovannaya.
— The main reason is that it is still impossible to be qualified in laser dentistry either in classical dental institutions of higher education or at post-graduate departments. So, to be able to start working with a laser, the dentist needs basic information and then more advanced workshops and courses. Organizing such training will be the Academy’s primary objective.
Another objective the Academy of Laser Dentistry will aim to attain is to join specialists working with laser technologies, create a kind of a specialized club. The Academy will provide a platform for sharing experience and opinions and will accumulate scientific achievements in this field, support research and practical studies. In addition, it should help Russian specialists to join the global community of practising dentists working with the laser. The Academy will provide for prompt solution of organizational issues related to participation in international congresses and help specialists to jointly attend events. The goal is again to improve the level of education and advance technical skills — all in all, it is another opportunity for development in the context of the international experience.
— The Academy’s work will be connected with systematization of accumulated knowledge, enhancement of the efficiency of laser-related procedures and, of course, training of specialists who have not yet had the chance to try laser technologies in their everyday practice, says Yaroslav Filatov, Head Doctor at Laser Smile dental clinic (Samara).
— Working in the Academy inspires me personally towards a more intensive study of the laser dentistry. I am absolutely certain that using lasers in dentistry is not remote future but already here and now, believes Yaroslav Filatov.
In the year to come the new institution plans to conduct conferences, workshops and lectures in Russia and abroad. Practical activities are already in progress, being organized on the basis of a training center equipped in one of Unident dental clinics in Moscow.

Dental Expo, the largest dental exhibition in Russia, came to an end in Crocus-Expo Exhibition Center. We were glad to see you at UNIDENT stand, where the full range of dental equipment and materials was presented.

A workshop was held in Unident dental clinics for experts interested in the opportunities of the laser dentistry. The leading dentists of the clinics network performed a variety of soft and hard tissue procedures. Special priority was given to issues relating to the application of lasers in child treatment – participants were interested to know if the innovative technique could attract parents and young patients to the clinic.

At the major implantology symposium organized by Nobel Biocare in Odessa, for the first time in Ukraine UNIDENT presented OraQuick express tests for HIV and Hepatitis C detection. For dental surgeons the problem of infection security is a highly acute issue so the new technique aroused much interest among practising dentists from Ukraine, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Kazakhstan and Russia.
