Presentation of OraQuick express tests in Odessa

At the major implantology symposium organized by Nobel Biocare in Odessa, for the first time in Ukraine UNIDENT presented OraQuick express tests for HIV and Hepatitis C detection. For dental surgeons the problem of infection security is a highly acute issue so the new technique aroused much interest among practising dentists from Ukraine, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Kazakhstan and Russia.

Today Ukraine is affected by an epidemic of Hepatitis C, which has spread throughout the CIS and Europe and has infected more than a million of Ukrainians; in a few years this figure may grow two-fold. According to the first results of screening assays in several big Ukrainian cities, in each thousand of Ukrainians five are infected with Hepatitis C. But it is very rare that patients warn dentists about the diseases they have.

That is why in Ukraine the problem of preventing the spread of Hepatitis C and HIV is an issue of concern. The interest of implant surgeons to OraQuick express tests is another proof of that.

Most of participants of the Odessa forum heard about the OraQuick system for the first time – for Russia and CIS countries express tests are a new product. Many surgeons were quite cautious about the reliability of twenty-minute HIV and Hepatitis C tests based on crevicular fluid analysis.

However, in practice testing patients for infections considered to be the most dangerous ones in most cases exceeds expectations of dentists. Knowing the true number of infected patients being attended by them, dentists change their view of the infection security of their work. It is one thing to know the overall percentage of infected persons in the country and suppose that the percentage of infected persons among your patients is more or less the same, and it is quite a different thing to get to know how things are in reality.

Patients with positive test results are normally directed to a specialized state center for additional examinations. The practical experience of Russian dentists working with OraQuick tests there were no test results that failed to be confirmed afterwards.

“If test results prove to be really accurate, this method will certainly become number one for specialists who need to know whether the patient is infected with HIV or Hepatitis or not,” says Dental Surgeon Andrey Grigoryants, one of the symposium participants (Sanabilis Oral and Dental Surgery Clinic, Moscow). “OraQuick is an excellent advanced device!”

When offered to be tested for HIV and Hepatitis C antibodies before the visit, the patient will surely trust the dentist more because it clearly demonstrates that the staff of the clinic takes the responsibility for the spread of infections.
Throughout Ukraine the test system for detecting HIV by saliva and blood already has a state registration certificate; shortly, similar certificates are expected to be received for OraQuick Hepatitis C tests in the near future.

A Workshop on Laser Systems in Moscow

A workshop was held in Unident dental clinics for experts interested in the opportunities of the laser dentistry. The leading dentists of the clinics network performed a variety of soft and hard tissue procedures. Special priority was given to issues relating to the application of lasers in child treatment – participants were interested to know if the innovative technique could attract parents and young patients to the clinic.
