International Cello Festival Vivacello 5

Giovanni Sollima

The closing concert of the Festival held in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall on November 16, was dedicated to the memory of Daniil Shafran, the great cellist, the brightest representative of the Russian cello school who would be 90 this year.

The event was attended by such world-renowned cellists as Giovanni Sollima, Alexander Rudin, Boris Andrianov, David Geringas and the unique countertenor Oleg Bezinskikh. The Russian Philharmonic Orchestra directed by the Italian conductor Gianluca Marciano also performed. The program included pieces by Kancheli, Tchaikovsky, Sollima and Martin. At the concert, the audience could hear Amati's cello made in 1630, which Daniil Shafran played his entire creative life.

The Fifth Vivacello Festival was opened by performance of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.

The Fifth Vivacello Festival was opened by performance of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra in the Bolshoi (Grand) Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. One of the most famous ensembles in the world under Stefan Vladar marked the beginning of a whole range of concerts performed by outstanding musicians at Moscow's best venues for a fortnight.

On the eve of the Festival opening, the Conservatory hosted a press conference brought together leading media representatives. Iveta Manasherova, the founder of the U-Art: You and Art Foundation, Boris Andrianov, Art Director of the Festival, and Stefan Vladar, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra conductor and the participant of the Vivacello opening concert, answered the journalists’ questions.

Dmitry Illarionov and Boris Andrianov

The second concert of the Festival was held in the Chamber Hall of the Moscow International House of Music. The audience could hear authors' transcriptions for guitar and cello of both classical and folk works. Despite the fact that Boris Andrianov and guitarist Dimitry Illarionov performed at the Festival together for the first time ever, the musicians work together for more than ten years now.

As part of the concert, the world premiere of the play by Efrem Podgaits written specially for Vivacello was performed. The famous composer, who also heard performance of his work for the first time, praised the play of the musicians and the unique concert program of the evening.

Terem-Quartet, Boris Andrianov, Iveta and Tamaz Manasherovs

The chamber concert of the Festival was held at the Tchaikovsky Cultural Center where Terem-Quartet from St. Petersburg and Boris Andrianov performed. Terem-Quartet is the first ensemble of Russian folk instruments which won hearts of philharmonic halls all over the world. The ensemble has created new sounding born from the combination of symphonic music and performance on folk instruments. The unique manner of the ensemble gives exquisiteness to any genre. At the concert held on November 08 off−beat arrangements of classical and jazz tunes and folk themes were performed.

On November 09, at the Orkestrion Concert Hall, the program Cello-Jazz was performed – classic music touched with jazz. The tone of the evening was set by the famous Oleg Lundstrem Big-Band, the oldest jazz band in the world. The Chamber Orchestra directed by charismatic Boris Frumkin did not let the audience get distracted from the music even for a second. The famous cellists Alexander Buzlov, Boris Andrianov, Georgy Gusev, Georgy Yufa, and the outstanding pianist Ksenia Bashmet performed solo.

The closing work of the evening was Westory by the young composer Anna Drubich: periphrase on the theme of the musical West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein for two cellos, piano and jazz orchestra.

On November 13, the Bolshoi Hall of the Conservatory hosted a concert of the legendary singer and composer Giovanni Sollima. As part of the Ba-Rock Cello program, the Italian musician spoke about the history of cello art from the first baroque compositions to rock music. Emotional charge that Sollima gives the audience fully submerges the listener into what is happening on the stage. Facial expressions, gestures, continuous experiments of the musician make his manner of playing unique. The concert was the most avant-garde project of the Fifth Festival.
