A multi-specialty clinic at the Military Medical
Academy has opened in Saint Petersburg. The equipment for the modern medical
facility has been provided and installed by MedImport; the company took care of
the project design, integration, supplies, installation, and startup. One of
the key novelties was the cutting-edge Brainlab system for operating rooms,
which currently has no parallels in healthcare facilities
nationwide.
The Military Medical Academy (MMA) was founded in the 18th
century. It is Russia’s first medical institution preparing medical
personnel for the Armed Forces. The Academy has since the very beginning proven
itself as a flagship of Russian military medicine.
It was the place of work for such prominent scientists as
Nikolay Pirogov, the founder of the Russian school of anesthesia, and the
physiologist Ivan Pavlov, the first Russian Nobel laureate. In May 2015, a
successful transplantation of facial tissues was carried out in the MMA. The
operation was the first in Russian history and only the thirty second in the
history of world medicine.

2014 saw the launch of a large-scale
renovation project: 11 dilapidated buildings were pulled down on the territory,
and the new clinical cluster was created, taking an area of 20 soccer fields
and featuring 7 buildings with a common ‘core’. It took MedImport 6 months
to implement the project: from January when the works began till end of July
when MMA’s new equipment was demonstrated to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The head of state examined the departments of diagnostics and intensive care,
then was shown the coordination center where, among other things, telemedical
consultations are given via a video channel. The President also visited
the hemodialysis department, the ophthalmology clinic and the operating
rooms.
The clinic is furnished enough for the most difficult
operations such as transplantations of human organs, as well as for other
high-tech kinds of medical assistance. Russia’s Defense Ministry considers
the MMA clinic to be the largest in the country and possibly
even in Europe.
The equipment MedImport put in commission includes 2
MRI systems, 2 CT scanners, and 18 medical ultrasound scanners. The dental
department was furnished with a laser diode, an erbium laser and a 3D
digital tomography scanner. The company installed a new angiographic
system, a mobile CT scanner and state-of-the-art consoles for surgeons and
anesthesiologists in the hybrid operating room. It is also there that the most
important and original part of the project found its place: a system of
Brainlab integrated operating rooms.
The new MMA facility has Brainlab’s Buzz system which, in
fact, has become a control and information center for the clinic’s operating
rooms. The advantage of a ‘smart operating room’ is that it rids doctors
of many auxiliary actions, allowing them to request information in the
course of a medical procedure. Such room is equipped with
a user-friendly 42−inch touchpad that can be either wall- or rack-mounted.
So the doctor no longer needs to memorize the results of MRI, CT
and angiography before the operation; he/she can have an on-screen real-time
access to them using the clinic’s electronic database. If needed, MRI scans can
be applied to angiography results, and the data can be gathered into a single
3D model of the operated area.
In parallel to that, the data of the room camera and the
vitals monitoring are shown on additional screens. The Brainlab system of
operating rooms also enables one to manage auxiliary equipment such as cameras,
lights, and partitions. The three Buzz modules are installed in the
emergency department, the reception ward and the ophthalmology department.
The furnishing of the new MMA facility will continue, with the second phase
scheduled for the end of 2017 — 2018. It will cover the clinical
diagnostic lab and a suite of 23 operating rooms.

The internal design of the facility will help solve the age-old problem
of the Academy — the poor territorial integrity of most departments and clinics
as parts of the whole. The new concept provides convenient logistics for
everyone — the Academy patients, staff, and students. All buildings are to be
connected with special corridors, so that, for example, a patient in a serious
condition will not need to be transported across the whole territory for an MRI
test
