Pedro Morales: After reading my CV, Vice President of Biolase International came to me in Madrid!
Only
a decade ago laser technologies were treated as a breakthrough in dental
practices and there were but a handful of manufacturers of these “wonder
devices”. Today, laser technologies are becoming increasingly popular, the
number of manufacturers of laser equipment keeps growing, and Biolase (a U.S.
company) keeps the leadership on global market.
The hero of our regular column Our Partners today is Pedro Morales, Biolase Sales Director (Europe, Africa, South America and Middle East). An MBA, an enthusiastic traveler, diver and workaholic, Mr. Morales will unveil the mystery of how he had predicted great future for the Internet, what he wanted to be in his green years and what is to expect from Biolase in the year to come.
— Greetings,
Pedro! Biolase
— Greetings! I joined Biolase in 2002. Found this job in the Internet. After reading my CV, Vice President of Biolase International rushed packing to find me in Madrid. After the interview, he invited me for the two weeks of training in the corporate headquarters in California. Looking for job in the Internet is no big deal today, but back in 2002 people would still be looking for job ads in printed media. I remember telling my friends that pretty soon we all will be doing everything via the Internet: look for jobs, talk to our relatives, seek romance… They would stare back at me as if I were nuts!
— What is most difficult in your
job?
— My mission is to provide extensive
support to promotion of Biolase products at the dental markets of Europe,
Middle East, Africa and Latin America. I really don’t think that my job is that
hard. I have established very good relationship with our distributors around
the world. The only problem, the way I see it, is a vast distance between our
representatives which makes it hard for me to provide as much assistance to our
remote partners as they need it. People keep asking me if it is hard to spend
the better part of my life on the road, and I keep answering that I enjoy my
business trips tremendously, as they also help me travel around the world,
discovering cultures of other countries, etc.
— What do you think of competition in your
industry around the world?
— The market of laser
equipment has been increasingly competitive on a global scale, especially in
diode lasers. These technologies are gaining popularity in dental sector, what
with their lower cost and faster return of investments.
About 30 companies are working on diode lasers around the world. Personally, I like competing with my colleagues. I am sure that honest competition between the companies is inevitably beneficial to advancement of new technologies. Meanwhile, Biolase has always been No. 1 company on the global market of dental laser technologies and we continuously prove it by our quality lasers, whether already operated or being designed.
— Do you remember your first visit to
Russia?
— One of the positive factors in my job
is the opportunity to travel. Of course, I remember my first visit to Moscow.
It was in April 2009 when I was invited to the UNIDENT stand at Dental
Salon. Ever since, I was here two more times and I think Moscow is one of the
most striking cities in the world with very friendly people. I enjoy my trips
here tremendously. And I am especially pleased how warm the UNIDENT team
welcomes me, for which I am grateful to our Russian partners.
— Is there anything that makes Russian dental
market special?
— It is no secret that the
Russian dental market is the biggest in Europe and in the world. What makes it
special is that it is open to international products and innovative
technologies.
I see a great potential for promotion of laser technologies in Russia within
the next few years already. The lasers are becoming increasingly popular as the
dentists discover the efficiency of lasers in their practices. In Europe, for
example, one can see laser equipment in most dental clinics. I am sure that
Russian clinics will follow the suit pretty soon as well.
— What do you think about cooperation with
UNIDENT?
— I first got to know the company in
2005 when I met Konstantin Platitsyn, UNIDENT Laser Technologies Manager, at
the conference of Biolase distributors in Cologne (Germany). A few years later,
in 2009, I visited IDS exhibition where I met Mr. Tamaz Manasherov. I like
working with UNIDENT very much. I am particularly impressed by the company’s
personnel policy. Every time I come to Moscow and visit Moscow office or an
exhibition, I see familiar faces. The majority of employees have been with
UNIDENT for quite a while already. I am happy to have good partnership
relations with Mr. Tamaz and the UNIDENT team. Our companies have been
cooperating for over 10 years already. Cooperation this long speaks for
itself.
— What is Biolase planning for the next
year?
— Our main goal is to keep expanding the
international consumer network. In 2010, Biolase commenced the iLase
project — a compact laser unit for treatment of soft tissues, periodontal
procedures and root channel disinfection. Quite possibly, it will become a
bestseller next year!
— Where did you study and what did you want to
be in childhood?
I am a lucky one, because I had an
opportunity to study abroad. I got my MBA at Atlantic University
(FAU), and my education opened new opportunities. I spent three years in the
United States where I learned to live, work and study in international
environment. I spent my university years at the campus where I met students
from various continents.
As a kid, I dreamt of being a pilot, because I was itching to travel, see new countries and cultures. Today, even though I never made it to a professional pilot, my childhood dreams came true, well, to certain extent. My job requires lots of flights and travels, meeting interesting people and vivid impressions.
— Please tell us a few words about your
family.
— I was born in Spain. I come from a big
family — 2 brothers and one sister. We are very close and I always
enjoy every opportunity to spend time together with them whenever I am in
Madrid. I particularly love our Sunday afternoons when we all sit down at a big
table and one of the brothers makes his specialty dish.
— Do you have any
hobbies?
— When I have free time, you can find
me in a swimming pool where I practice diving. I take part in European and
world diving championship. I also enjoy relaxing at home with my family,
friends, going to the cinema or just read a book.
— Oh, I am quite a dreamer. All I’m thinking of right now is job. I would like to go many places, meet more people, see Biolase growing stronger and every clinic having our lasers!
— What would you wish to our
readers?
— First of all, I would like to thank
Unident Today for the opportunity to get closer to your readers. I wish your
subscribers to keep their minds open to our innovative technologies, thereby
making their clinics more competitive, their labor more productive, and their
patients get positive emotions from visiting the dentist’s office.
