VI International Cello Festival
Vivacello goes far beyond the scope of direct associations triggered by the wording “cello festival”. Nevertheless, all of its components, namely, theatrical performances, video installations and shows of musicians working in all kinds of genres, are intertwined into a single story where a cello is the protagonist.
November 11, 2014 Great Hall of the Moscow
The grand opening of the festival took place in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. The world premiere of the musical piece “Musica con cello” for solo cello, chamber orchestra and phonogram created by the Russian composer Pavel Karmanov was the high point of the festival. The opening programme was drawn up with due account for versatile tastes and preferences: apart from the music of the XXI century (pieces by Pavel Karmanov and Giovanni Sollima), cello opuses by Rakhmaninov, Glazunov and Tchaikovsky were played by the musicians of the Berlin chamber orchestra and soloists such as Tatyana Vasilyeva (Russia), Monika Leskovar (Croatia) and Boris Andrianov. Cristian Mandeal was at the conductor’s stand.
Pavel Karmanov — composerIt is a great honor for me to participate in such event. I know Boris Andrianov for a long time, and there was much conversation about me composing a special piece for Vivacello for three years, and finally we managed to implement our plan. It has to be said that Boris asked me to compose a piece with rock music elements; therefore, I added drum beats to it. The music is composed in a cheerful manner of the festival on purpose, and I hope that after the show the audience will return to our gloomy autumn Moscow living in good spirits. |
November 14, 2014 Presentation of the ‘‘Seance’’ CD. Chamber Hall of the Moscow International Performing Arts Center
A unique concert took place in the Chamber Hall of the Moscow International Performing Arts Center: Boris Andrianov performed along with Edin Karamazov, renowned Bosnian lutenist, guitar player and Grammy prize winner who recorded the album called “Songs from the Labyrinth” with Sting in 2006.
Last year a collaborative CD of Boris Andrianov and Edin Karamazov named “Seance” was recorded, pieces from which were played at the concert. Pieces of old and modern composers were played, from Bach, Schubert and to our contemporaries, including Russian guitarist and composer Nikita Koshkin.

November 21, 2014 Multimedia Art Museum
A project which combined cello with modern video art was presented in the Multimedia Art Museum on Ostozhenka Street. Arnold Schoenberg’s “Transfigured Night” was played, which the composer wrote in 1899 using the poem of Richard Dehmel “The Woman and the World” as a basis.
Video installation created by the soloist of “SPBCh” group Kirill Ivanov, a poet and journalist who is also known by his video art works became an integral part of the “Night”. The second piece of the programme — “Blitz” for chamber orchestra — was written by modern French composer Richard Dubugnon. It is dedicated to famous chess games in history. Musica Viva chamber orchestra conducted by Leonid Kazakov, the David Oistrakh quartet, Boris Andrianov and Daniel Austrich (viola) took part in the concert.
Richard Dubugnon — composerI wanted to compose a piece
that would be accompanied by video on a concert
for a long time. It seems to me that working
with visual art is of importance today. I walked
down the Moscow streets yesterday and saw many
advertisements which are shown not as a poster
but as a moving picture. Such works represent the common
modern trend. Therefore, I wanted to create something interactive,
so that piece had both musical and visual
interpretation. Both video sequence and the structure
of “Blitz” are united by a general topic — a chess
tournament. The number of musicians matches the number of pieces
on a chess board. I composed melodies for different chess
moves, and it took some time for harmonious
sounds to appear in this system of mine.

November 22, 2014 Sovremennik Theater
A theater project which is especially important for Vivacello took place in the Sovremennik Theater. The first night of the project had a great success two years ago during the Fourth festival.
Literary and musical piece “Dedicated to Yalta” was included in the programme of the Sovremennik Theater this season, and one of the performances was given within the framework of the festival. The stage play in which Artur Smolyaninov is both a director and an actor is based on the cognominal poem of Joseph Brodsky accompanied by Alfred Schnittke’s music. As compared to the performance given at the festival earlier, this theatrical obtained complete sound supplemented with costumes, set design and new scenic solutions. During the whole performance we can see musicians: Boris Andrianov and Katya Skanavi (piano), whose role in the play is by no means less important than the role of actors.
November 24, 2014. Three centuries of cello. The P.I. Tchaikovsky Concert Hall
Festivals of different years were dedicated to the brightest Russian musicians: first Vivacello — to greta Rostropovich, fifth festival — to incredible Daniel Shafran. This year’s festival is confined to the 80th anniversary of the birth of Alfred Schnittke. His Concert No. 1 for cello performed by Boris Andrianov and orchestra was played at the Vivacello closing ceremony in the P.I. Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.
The evening programme also included pieces
of C. Ph. E. Bach, Vivaldi and Edouard Lalo. Each of these
composers represents its era, from baroque to romanticism,
and along
